RC-UK Energy Programme: Heat and the City

Exploring affordable, low carbon community heating in cold climate cities.

Our research

  • 'What works' for delivering successful community/low carbon/energy efficient heating systems in Northern European cities?
  • In-depth case studies: Edinburgh and Glasgow sustainable heating initiatives.
  • Do city-wide approaches to sustainable heating and energy efficiency provide effective practical, financial and environmental benefits?

Our approach

  • Multi-disciplinary team, encompassing the social, environmental and engineering sciences.
  • Working with government, city councils, community groups, businesses and public bodies, drawing on and sharing experience.
  • Helping cities solve the combined social, political and technical challenges of heating city buildings more efficiently and securely, while reducing carbon emissions.
